Space was allocated for a shopping centre, and single family dwellings were separated from apartment buildings, offices and industrial space. Don Mills was considered so successful, both financially and socially, that the model was repeated throughout Canada until the late 1970s. After 1945, urban renewal schemes were attempted by all levels of government federal, provincial and municipal to try to improve the housing conditions in city cores see Urban Reform. Most politicians and planners believed that urban renewal involving the expropriation of homes and businesses, the clearing of land and the building of new often public housing would revitalize the edges of the downtown and make this housing more acceptable to those who were migrating to the suburbs. Massive urban renewal schemes met with stiff resistance from the displaced working class families. Owners of expropriated property did not receive enough compensation to purchase a similar house elsewhere.

a wonderful goal as we approach the 21st century. I urge everyone around the world with Shroud resources to become a participant in this archiving project by contacting Michael Minor at the address below. Remember, it can't happen without you!Michael Minor P. O. Drawer 878 104 West Grove Street Kaufman, Texas 75142 Fax: 972 932 7742 I am pleased to announce the opening of the new Collegamento pro Sindone Home Page. Presented in Italian and English, this beautiful website includes many photographs of the Cathedral and Chapel, a map of geographical areas related to the Shroud, an illustrated Shroud history, an annotated photographic map of the Shroud, links to other Shroud websites and much more. Created by my friend and colleague, Maurizio Marinelli, it promises to grow very rapidly into a substantial website, with the able assistance of fellow Collegamento members Ilona Farkas and Emanuela Marinelli, both noted Shroud researchers and authors. Over the past two years, the Collegamento has made major contributions to this website by providing English translations of articles and much of the "Shroud Booklist". Now, I am pleased to extend a hearty "welcome to the Internet" to my good friends in Rome and wish them great success on their own site. Links to the new site have also been added to the "Links To More Information" and the "Collegamento pro Sindone" pages of this website. Another professional travel organization offering organized tours to Italy for the 1998 Shroud Exhibition has been added to the "Shroud Exhibitions" page of the site.

Graffiti in the ruined Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which were buried by volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius in ad 79, show us that political corruption, commercial competition, creative writing, and even insulting language have long been parts of daily urban life. The portraits and murals preserved in the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum also show that people of different ethnic groups have long congregated in cities. Cities foster a cosmopolitan mix of ethnicities, languages, and religions. Because cities are considered places of economic opportunity, people of varied backgrounds are pulled toward them. This level of social inclusion, particularly in large cities, in turn attracts many other newcomers with divergent ideas and lifestyles. As a result, cities allow individuals to seek out and associate with others who share their political, religious, and social views. Some city dwellers, however, segregate themselves from others because they have little tolerance for people of other ethnicities or social groups. As a consequence, discrimination and bigotry exist even in cosmopolitan cities. When the members of one group are generally poorer or wealthier than the members of another group, there is a greater likelihood that tensions, misunderstandings, and violence may erupt. Yet despite sensationalist news reports of race riots, interethnic violence, and hate crimes, the vast majority of city dwellers prefer to live in peace with their diverse neighbors. Large cities have attracted millions of people from desperately poor rural areas who end up having to live in slums and shantytowns.
